"The goal of this report is to help aging services leaders better understand the risks associated with providing care for the aging population, and to offer practical actions to enhance resident services," said Ellen Wodika. "By evaluating our claim data we are able to identity major risk exposures that are leading causes of claims for aging services organizations."

The 2014 report includes two datasets of CNA Aging Services professional liability closed claims with a comparison of consistencies and changes over time.  The report's analysis of claim data revealed that:

  • As in the previous claims study, resident falls is the most frequent allegation. Approximately two-thirds of these falls occurred in the resident's room or bathroom.
  • Gross improper care, elopement and failure to follow physician's orders were the highest exposure cases.
  • On average, closed claims related to residents admitted for short-term stays cost approximately 10.4 percent more than long-term-stay closed claims.

The topics addressed in the 2014 claims report have expanded to include an enterprise-wide approach to risk management. In addition to professional risk exposures, commercial, cyber and automobile risk exposures are reviewed. Information regarding these risk exposures indicated that:

  • Water damage and weather-related property damage were the most frequent causes of loss for commercial closed claims.
  • Of all CNA data breach claims between 2003 and 2013, approximately 23 percent involved healthcare, making it the industry with the highest incidence of cyber claim activity for CNA insureds.
  • Aging services organizations are experiencing a significant increase in automobile accidents involving employee drivers and resident passengers.

The new Aging Services Claims Report is the eighth study in a series of aging services claims reports published by CNA since 1998. For more information, or to download a copy of the report, please visit Aging Services Claim Report.
